Tickets for RVAsec 2017 are now on sale!

Early registration price is only $125 for great speakers, food and beverages, t-shirt, swag, parking and more!

RVAsec’s base ticket price for 2017 is $150 and will be in place on 3/1–so don’t wait! And if that’s not enough incentive to purchase your tickets early, late registrations (after 4/21) will be $225!

Don’t forget all the things you get with registration, including 2 full days of talks, meals, snacks, drinks, reception, after party, prizes, a capture the flag contest, t-shirt & swag!

RVAsec is a Richmond, VA based security convention that brings top industry speakers to the midatlantic region. For 2017, the conference is a two day and dual-track format, with a mixed focus on technical and management/business presentations.

All talks must be 50 minutes in length, and submissions will need to select from one of two tracks:

  • Business
  • Technical

The following types of presentations will not be accepted:

  • Sales or marketing for companies or products
  • CFP submissions from in-house or agency PR/marketing professionals
  • Talks which do not offer new insight or perspective

RVAsec will hold no copyright on presentation content, but all speakers will be required to provide approval to post slides and video recordings of the talk on the RVAsec or other web sites.

No Breach Required: $52 Million in Cybersecurity Fraud Settlements Built on Paperwork, Not Incidents (<– add to your schedule)

We present original research quantifying the gap between what federal contractors certify about their security posture and what vulnerability telemetry actually shows, combining data science with False Claims Act enforcement analysis to estimate the real FCA exposure across the defence industrial base. We then ask whether the industry’s own risk-scoring tools, built to make triage rational, are inadvertently building the evidentiary record that makes fraud prosecution easier.

Michael Roytman:
Michael Roytman is the CTO of Empirical Security. Previously, he was the Chief Data Scientist of Kenna Security, and a Distinguished Engineer at Cisco. He served on boards for the Society of Information Risk Analysts, Cryptomove, and Social Capital. He was the co-founder and executive chair of Dharma Platform (acquired, BAO Systems), for which he landed on the 2017 Forbes 30 Under 30 list. He currently serves on Forbes Technology Council.

Max Voldman:
Max Voldman is a partner at Whistleblower Partners LLP, in Washington DC. Max’s practice is focused on representing whistleblowers under the federal False Claims Act and numerous state law equivalents, and the whistleblower programs of the Securities and Exchange Commission. Max has represented whistleblowers in various industries, including government contracting, healthcare, and education.

AI SOC and Securing your Environment (<– add to your schedule)

This discussion is designed to help teams figure out where AI fits in their environment from an analysis perspective, it is vendor agnostic and includes agentic deployments, as well as AI SOC services, novel attack vectors from independent research, and the overarching philosophy of how the threat landscape has just massively changed and how to adapt to it.

Ryan Bird:
Ryan Bird moved to the MVA area in 2017 with his wife. He helped train the United States Army in their ASOT level one program as well as MCTOG in 29 Palms through 2019 with Obsidian Solutions Group before working at Annapolis Defense in a Maritime Security role. After Covid hit he went on to start school at University of Maryland Global Campus and began work in his first cyber security role at RSM Defense when it was being stood up with Unit 26, He then went on to support the Department of States’ Personal Security Device program, and on to FEMA at Mount Weather supporting their internal SOC with One Zero Solutions. He has since been hired at GuidePoint as a Security and Delivery Engineer supporting Elastic and CrowdStrike.

In 2019 he was also part of the Storm the Hill event at IAVA – assisting the IAVA team by talking to congressman and women about veteran suicide in order to get the Commander Scott Hannon bill passed, which changed the VA healthcare system to auto enroll service members upon discharge. He additionally did Disaster relief work during Hurricane Florence, and supported his Uncle running for Commonwealth’s Attorney in 2025 in the City of Fredericksburg.

He has brought common security knowledge from the physical security philosophy to the cyber side of things and holds a unique mindset and experience working his way from an Analyst position to a key member at GuidePoint’s Mid Atlantic SECOPS team.

Throughout 2022, the Lares® Advisory Services team has tracked emerging trends while assisting organizations of various sizes and maturity with Virtual CISO, IT/OT Risk Assessments, Offensive Assessments, and Security Program Management engagements. TOP 5 CISO Findings (most frequently observed not necessarily the most severe) resulted from our tracking. This presentation unveils the findings, discussing them in the context of current and emerging threats. I also incorporate an MIT Sloan cybersecurity use case and the Verizon DBIR to expound on the findings.

We close out the talk by listing remedies for the Top 5 Findings. A sampling of remedies includes the selection of a framework, threat modeling, and tactical assessments to help organizations discover and avoid the risks associated with the Top 5 Findings.

About Mark – Mark Arnold has a 20+ cybersecurity career, serving 8 of those years in leadership roles. As a transformational leader, Mark has built security teams and programs, authored maturity model blueprints, and implemented security domain practices at large enterprises and service providers. Mark’s areas of interest include cloud security, threat intelligence, and vulnerability research, nation-state attack methods and related activities (e.g. information operations and disinformation campaigns), and their collective impact on nations and society. He holds industry certifications and degrees from Stanford, Princeton Seminary, and Harvard University. He is a former competitive gymnast and an ordained minister but, most importantly, a husband and dad.

Due to this many government contracts require security compliance to the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) 800-171 standard. For years businesspeople didn’t take the 110 security controls seriously. Now we are seeing deals being lost to the Supplier Performance Risk System score. Ian has helped dozens of organizations implement compliance programs since 2017 in his role of vCSO.

Andy is the author of 1% Leadership. He is the Advisory CISO at Orca Security and the Operating Partner at YL Ventures, and is an advisor to several cyber security startups, including Vulcan, Uptycs, Grip, Perygee, Vendict, Valence, Piiano, and Eureka. He is the founder and CEO of Duha, a leadership development consultancy that brings training to people earlier in their careers.

Andy Ellis is a seasoned technology and business executive with deep expertise in security, managing risk, and leading an inclusive culture. In his twenty-year tenure at Akamai, Andy led the information security organization from a single individual to a 90+ person team, over 40% of whom were women. Andy designed systems, governed risk management, implemented policy, and supported go-to-market functions. Widely respected across the cybersecurity industry for his pragmatic approach to aligning security and business needs,

Andy regularly speaks and writes on cybersecurity, leadership, diversity & inclusion, and decision-making. Andy has received a wide variety of accolades, including the CSO Compass Award, Air Force Commendation Medal, Spirit of Disneyland Award, Wine Spectator Award of Excellence (for The Arlington Inn), and was the winner of the Sherman Oaks Galleria Spelling Bee. He was inducted into the CSO Hall of Fame in 2021.

He currently serves on Harvard University’s Visiting Committee to IT. After receiving a degree in computer science from MIT, Andy served as an officer in the United States Air Force with the 609th Information Warfare Squadron and the Electronic Systems Center.
